Paeonia lactiflora – Chinese Peony
(Sold as a root division)
The Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is one of the most beautiful peony species for garden cultivation. It forms strong, bushy clumps that can grow over 1 meter tall. The plant features elegantly divided foliage and large, showy blooms in various shades of pink and carmine, as well as white, with flowers ranging from single to semi-double and fully double. Flowering occurs in May and June. The underground part consists of large, strongly branched root tubers.
🌿 Cultivation
Peonies thrive in sunny or lightly shaded locations. They prefer fertile, humus-rich, loamy, slightly acidic soil. With proper care, they can remain in the same spot for many years. Peonies are propagated by dividing mature, well-established plants at the end of August or the beginning of September. The divided root clumps should be planted shallowly, at 60–80 cm spacing.
💧 Care
Peonies tolerate drought quite well, but before flowering they require abundant watering. Annual fertilization with well-rotted manure is recommended, as it gives the best results. Mineral fertilizers may also be used, especially for plants that have been growing in the same place for many years.
Remove faded flowers and seed pods regularly to keep the plants attractive and to encourage better growth.
🪴 Storage
Peony roots should be replanted immediately after digging up. If temporary storage is needed (for a few days or weeks), keep them in a cool, airy room, covered with sand to prevent drying.
🌸 Uses
The peony is one of the most beautiful perennials for cut flowers. When cut in the bud stage, the flowers last 5–6 days in a vase. Peonies are also excellent for lawns and group plantings, usually in clusters of several plants of the same variety, where they create stunning displays.
